JONESBORO, Ark (KAIT) - The K9 shot during an incident at a shooting range is on the quick path to recovery.

According to the Jonesboro Police Department, Rocket’s handler, JPD Officer Jason Myers, said he would be back to work in four to six weeks. First, he needs to be cleared by staff at the Animal Medical Center.

Rocket was shot on April 30 on the firing range. Myers had him off his leash when a fellow officer began test firing a gun.

Rocket responded as he had been trained and tried to attack the officer. He evaded once and then shot Rocket in the shoulder.

Chief Rick Elliot suspended Officer Myers without pay for one day for having Rocket off his leash near fire training.
