MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The NBA Draft Lottery went way better than anybody expected for the Memphis Grizzlies. Instead of landing a pick that would’ve had to be conveyed to Boston, the Grizz come out #2 overall.
Now, the debate begins on who the Grizzlies should draft.
Duke’s Zion Williamson is expected to be chosen first overall by New Orleans. The next two best prospects are considered to be Murray State point guard Ja Morant and Duke wing RJ Barrett.
Most early mock drafts have the Grizzlies picking Morant, which makes sense considering the franchise could then entertain trade requests for veteran Mike Conley.
But Barrett is also an option, because the Grizz could use a solid scorer on the wing.
A tweet Wednesday night from Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony reports Memphis is fixated on taking Morant over Barrett.
Earlier Wednesday, Grizzlies team president Jason Wexler said he and VP of Basketball operations Zach Kleiman are already working on making sure they pick the right guy for this team.
“We were very appreciative of the good fortune we had last night.” Wexler said. “We spoke last evening, and it was one of those things where, OK, let’s take a deep breath, let’s enjoy the moment, but everybody’s already back to work, because we have to take the opportunity that was granted to us and put it to great use."
The NBA Draft is Thursday, June 20 at the Barclays Center in New York.
