JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) -The Jonesboro Police Department awarded one of its top honors to a young girl who “dares” to make a positive impact in her community.
During an assembly Thursday morning at International Studies Magnet School, Jonesboro police announced Alexa Dost won its D.A.R.E essay contest.
She beat out 1,400 fifth graders from around the city, according to a social media post to take home the top prize.
Students from 12 area schools participated in a 10-week program teaching them the negative effects of drugs and vaping, along with tips on dealing with peer pressure, stress, and bullying.
Afterward, they wrote essays explaining what they had learned and how they would apply those lessons to improve their communities.
