BONO, Ark. (KAIT) -A Region 8 city is talking pay raises at their next city council meeting.
Bono Mayor Danny Shaw set up a special committee to look at city council member pay wages throughout the county, discovering Bono sits near the bottom.
Each council member makes $106 per month right now, but an ordinance they’ll talk about at their next meeting would nearly double that, recommending $200 per month.
It also includes a $1,500 increase for the city clerk.
Mayor Shaw said it's an effort to get on the same level as other comparable cities and continue recruiting quality people.
“When we go to hire someone, we need to be able to tell them, number one, what they’re going to start out to make, and also what their room for advancement would be over a period of years,” Shaw said. “And ultimately, we’d like to hire good people and like to retain them.”
If the ordinance passes, the raises would take effect next year.
And Mayor Shaw said they do have enough money in the general fund to cover the increases.
The ordinance will see its first reading Tuesday, May 21.
