JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Craighead Electric is helping pave the way for solar energy in Northeast Arkansas.
The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality awarded Craighead Electric Cooperative with an award for their solar farm in Brookland.
Brian Duncan, CEO of Craighead Electric, said the cooperative received the Arkansas Energy Excellence Award for their 11-acre, one-megawatt solar farm in part due to their unique partnership with Northeast Arkansas Chapter of Quail Forever.
“We were able to use approximately three acres of land surrounding the solar array as a restoration for quail and monarch butterflies,” Duncan said.
Duncan said the project also serves as a learning experience for students at Brookland High School.
The solar project went online in October of 2018 and can produce enough energy to power 135 homes a year.
