Kayaker drowns after being trapped by log

REYNOLDS COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) - A 44-year-old woman drowned after she was thrown from a kayak on the Black River in Reynolds County, Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), Vanessa J. Gutierrez, of Arnold, was kayaking Saturday, May 18, when her watercraft hit a submerged log and she was thrown from the Kayak.

Gutierrez was then reportedly pinned against the submerged log and pulled under the water.

Reynolds County Coroner Jeff McSpadden pronounced Gutierrez dead early Sunday morning.

MSHP reports Gutierrez was not wearing a life jacket.

The drowning happened around 5:50 p.m. at the Smiley Face take out, which is one mile South of Lesterville, Missouri.
