Lady Liberty gets some limelight

PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) - The City of Paragould got national attention for their replica of the Statue of Liberty.

USA Today featured “10 surprising places to find the Statue of Liberty” and Paragould made the list.

The Paragould War Memorial Statue is meant to honor veterans from Greene County who served in WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Korean Wars.

Greene County Historian Erik Wright said the surrounding area recently realized how important the statue is.

“Greene County and Paragould has a history of not necessarily retaining its history very well,” Wright said. “Over the past decade or so we’ve gotten better about recognizing our history and preserving our history.”

Paragould’s Lady Liberty dates back to 1924 and is the oldest replica outside of New York.

Wright said it’s something the community should notice.

“I think that’s a really cool thing that we have here that not a lot of people realize anymore,” Wright said. “Next time you drive past it, give it a second glance.”

Paragould’s Statue of Liberty is the only WWI memorial that is not a Bell Boy Soldier Statue.
