Driver says he 'fell asleep’ just before crash on Southwest Drive

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - A Texas man told police he fell asleep behind the wheel just before a lunch hour crash Monday that shut down Southwest Drive.

The crash happened just before noon near the intersection of Southwest and Horne Drives, according to the initial incident report.

Jose Rosendo Olivarez, 27, of McAllen was northbound when his 2014 Nissan Altima left the roadway and struck a power pole.

He reportedly told first responders he was driving from Texas and had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Olivarez was taken to a local hospital then later airlifted to The Med in Memphis with serious injuries, the report stated.

His passenger, 25-year-old Consuelo Vera also suffered serious injuries after she was “partially ejected through the front windshield.” She was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.
