JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) -Robotics students from across Arkansas traveled to Region 8 to put their building skills to the test while helping their fellow classmates.

The Vex Robotics Hurricane Fall Classic Tower Takeover Tournament was held Saturday at the Jonesboro High School.

In addition to their robots, the 45 participating teams also brought canned goods.

The tournament’s sponsor, Suddenlink Communications, waived the entry fees for those teams that donated at least 50 canned goods to the school’s Cane Pantry.

One 7th-grade participant said the tournament was a great way to give the best of both worlds.

“You get to combine two things that everybody loves. Who doesn’t love robots, and you get to help out people as you do it,” said Keirra Hart.

Another 7th-grade participant, whose school brought the most canned goods, says this was an exciting moment for her and her team.

“I think it’s pretty good that we did this,” said Breiyana James of Conner Junior High School. “Some people need those canned goods to go to their house. I think it’s good that we donated the most.”

More than 1,800 cans of food were collected from all 45 teams.
