Protests against police brutality continue in Downtown Memphis

Protesters march through Downtown Memphis in peaceful demonstration

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A group of protesters raised their voices Friday night about the recent deaths of African Americans at the hands of police in other cities.

Demonstrators rallied at FedExForum at FedExForum, before beginning their march down historic Beale Street. then on to South Main.. then through the streets of downtown Memphis before winding back up at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Chanting “black lives matter” they took a knee at one point for more than eight minutes -- the amount of time George Floyd was pinned down a by Minneapolis police officer.

Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody Monday night. Floyd was handcuffed and pleading he could not breathe while the officer knelt on his neck. Several witnesses recorded the incident on their phones.

Protests have erupted all across the country in response to Floyd’s death, including in Memphis.

Friday makes the third night of protests in the Bluff City.
