Arkansas State women’s tennis falls to UT Arlington in Sun Belt opener

Opening its 2021 Sun Belt Conference schedule, the Arkansas State women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to UT Arlington Wednesday afternoon at the A-State Tennis Complex.

UT Arlington (5-0, 1-0 SBC) took an early advantage in the match by capturing the doubles’ point with wins on courts two and three. Thea Rice and Hunter Roper won 6-1. Carla Pons and Almudena Boza defeated Nejla Zukic and Yasmine Humber 6-3 and Shelby King and Jill Morse lost to Lucia Natal and Horiguchi 6-3 in the deciding match at No. 2 doubles’.

On the singles’ courts, Zukic lost to Pons 6-2, 6-0 on court five, while Morse dropped her court three match to Polina Akimova 6-0, 6-0. The Mavericks clinched the match when Bruna Casasampere defeated Amelia Guevremont 6-0, 6-1. Singles’ matches on courts one, two and four were unfinished, with the Mavericks leading on all three courts.
