The southeast Missouri region paid a price after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the SEMO District Fair last summer, because the fair brings business to the area.

One fair organizer said to expect it to be bigger and better than ever.

According to the president of the SEMO District Fair Board, Darrell Aufdenberg, vendors will be back this summer. Many rolled their bookings over from last year to this year.

He said the board made the decision to go ahead and schedule the fair after speaking with the state’s fair organization.

“We missed last year tremendously and it’s just exciting to see it coming together again,” Aufdenberg said. “And the people is the big thing. We get to see a lot of people we don’t get to see very often.”

The fair brings excitement after a year of many canceled events.

“It’s an exciting thing to be able to be involved in the community with other people. We’ve been socially distanced for so long. It’s kind of crazy, but it’s good to be around people again,” said Sam Gunn, who plans to bring his family to the fair.

“I’m actually excited ‘cause, I mean, there ain’t really nothing to do in Cape. That was actually fun. It’s food, ya know good food. I’s new things you can try, no rides, ya know, and fun with your friends,” said Deandre Baylis, a fan of the fair.

Aufdenberg said the fair board is working to keep the grounds safe this summer.

They will add sanitizing stations and masks will be available for those who want one.
