BATESVILLE, Ark. (KAIT) - Police say the student who died after his car went into Bryan Lake at Lyon College was suicidal.

A news release from the Batesville Police Department stated officers, Independence County Sheriff’s deputies, and witnesses tried to rescue the driver from the car.

The Independence County Dive Team showed up and pulled him from the water, but fire and emergency crews were not able to revive the driver.

Police identified the victim as Sonny Jade Pham, 21, of Batesville.

He was recently married back in July and worked at Walmart.

The Independence County Sheriff’s Office was already searching for Pham, who was believed to be suicidal.

On Monday afternoon, Interim President for Lyon College Melissa Taverner shared a message on Pham’s death.

Sonny was a computer science major minoring in mathematics,” Taverner wrote. “He was a bright student, and he made the Dean’s List for four consecutive semesters. He enjoyed gaming and took part in activities with the Lyon College Esports team.”

His funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Roller-Crouch Chapel at 2 p.m.

He will be buried at Campground Cemetery in Bethesda.

Taverner encouraged students, staff, and faculty to seek support and comfort from the chaplain’s office and the counseling center.
