A-State women’s golf takes season opener at USA Intercollegiate

MOBILE, Ala. (KAIT) - Finishing up with the lowest three-round total in program history at 14-under par 850, the Arkansas State women’s golf team topped host South Alabama by five strokes and won the USA Intercollegiate Monday at Magnolia Grove.
With the team title, A-State has won three of its last four regular season events and has a top three finish in five of the last seven regular season tournaments. The Red Wolves turned in the record low round at 7-under par 281 Monday and finish up the USA Intercollegiate with all three rounds under par, the first team to post three under par rounds in a single tournament in program history.
A-State’s three-round total of 850 tops the previous record by 17 strokes, set last season at the USA Intercollegiate. The Red Wolves three rounds under par equal the total from last season in which A-State set a program record with six par or better rounds. The Red Wolves drained 47 birdies in the event as head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw picks up the 14th tournament title in her tenure at Arkansas State.
Freshman Morgan Beaulieu was the top individual finisher in fifth place at 5-under par 211 (72-69-70) for the event, the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history. Beaulieu totaled 12 birdies against seven bogeys in her collegiate debut. Senior Olivia Schmidt turned in the low round of the day for A-State with a 3-under par 69 to finish tied for sixth at 4-under par 212 (74-69-69), the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in program history. It marks the seventh time Schmidt has totaled 213 or better in a tournament.
Sophomore Charlotte Menager was even par Monday and finished tied for 22nd with a total of 217 (73-72-72), a career best 54-hole total. Going 5-under par on the final eight holes, junior Elise Schultz totaled 218 (69-79-70) for the tournament and tied for 27th. Junior Kayla Burke also totaled 218 (70-72-76) for the event playing as an individual. Freshman Olivia Coit finished up with a total of 219 (71-74-74) in her collegiate debut to tie for 32nd.
A-State continues the fall portion of the 2022-23 schedule next week at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.
