MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shelby County has reached an agreement to purchase just more than 7 miles of an abandoned CSX rail line that will clear the way for contruction of a paved trail.
The Commercial Appeal reports Sunday the trail has been a long-term goal of local officials, who say it will improve residents' quality of life, help attract new businesses and possibly end Memphis' standing as 1 of the nation's most sedentary and obese cities.
A County Commission committee will review the deal this week. The agreement calls for the county to accept $4.8 million from a nonprofit group that raised the money through private fundraising to buy the land.
In addition, a $1.5 million federal grant will be used for the construction and the county will kick in $375,000.
