COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Columbia police officer has run over and killed a 24-year-old man who was lying in the street.

The Columbia Police Department said officer Alan Mitchell was traveling on Clark Lane in Columbia Saturday night when the vehicle struck Jeremy W. Setzer, who was lying in the westbound lane.

Setzer was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Mitchell is a 6-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports on its Web site that Mitchell has been placed on paid administrative leave while police conduct their investigation. It is not clear when he might return to duty.

Capt. Steve Monticelli told the Tribune on Sunday that Mitchell was given the leave because he was too distraught to work after the accident.
