Hot weather a boost for mosquitoes

ST. LOUIS (AP) - As if dealing with the heat wasn't bad enough, consider this: The hotter the weather, the faster mosquito larva develop.

St. Louis County vector control supervisor Joan Bradford says her agency is getting more calls about mosquitoes than last year. And many are Culex mosquitoes - the kind that carry the West Nile virus.

So far, out of 241 mosquitoes tested in the county, 45 have turned up positive for West Nile.

Chances of getting West Nile from a mosquito bite are slim, but experts say the fact that nearly 20% of tested mosquitoes had the virus is cause for awareness.
