PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) - A 13-year-old Pittsburg girl died when the car she was in hit by a vehicle fleeing from sheriff's deputies.

Cherokee County sheriff's deputies say the accident occurred Thursday night on U.S. 69 just south of Pittsburg.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says Cherokee County sheriff's deputies were chasing a Nissan Maxima when it rear-ended a Pontiac Vibe.

The teen, Taylor Kemp of Pittsburg, was a passenger in the Vibe. She died at the scene.

The 22-year-old Galena man driving the Maxima and a 41-year-old Pittsburg woman driving the Vibe were taken to a hospital in Joplin with serious injuries.

It was not immediately clear why the Maxima was being pursued.
