ASU’s Arauco Named to Lou Groza Award Watch List

JONESBORO (8/12/09) - Arkansas State senior kicker Josh Arauco has been named to the 2009 Lou Groza Award Watch List,  announced Wednesday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Arauco, a 2008 finalist for the award, is one of 30 players that have been named to the watch list for the top place kicker in college football's FBS division.

Arauco holds the Arkansas State career record for field goals made (44) and also has the second most points by kicking (215), third most points scored (215) and third most extra points made (87) in school history.  He enters his senior season with the third most career field goals in the nation among active players and needs just seven more to become the Sun Belt Conference's all-time leader.

The Grand Prairie, Texas native is a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection and was tabbed preseason All-America by  He has been named preseason All-Sun Belt by Sporting News, Lindy's, Athlon's, Phil Steele's and as well.

Arauco was a four-time Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week last season, making 17-of-20 field goals that included a school-record 15 in a row.

More than three hundred media representatives, coaches, past recipients, conference and university officials make up the voting panel which selects the recipient of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicking Award. The Award will be presented on Dec. 10, 2009, as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards program. The three finalists will be honored at the 18th annual Lou Groza Award Banquet to be held at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday Dec. 8.
