SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Springfield police say an officer shot and killed a man after he pointed a gun at the officer. The Springfield News-Leader reported that police identified the person killed in the shooting as 22-year-old Dumone D. Starks.
The shooting happened shortly after midnight on Saturday after officers pulled over a motorist suspected of drunken driving. Starks was a passenger in the car and fled as an officer was attempting to get him identified.
The newspaper reported that during the foot chase, Starks removed a handgun from under his shirt, and jacked the slide back, which placed a round in the chamber. He then pointed the stolen gun at the officer. The officer fired after Starks refused to drop the weapon.
The 24-year-old driver, Magic Peters, was arrested on outstanding warrants.
