Poinsett Fair's Future in Jeopardy

HARRISBURG, Ark. -- No fair.  No funnel cakes, either.

Organizers of the Poinsett County Fair say they will need more than $100,000 for new buildings to continue the county fair tradition.

Organizers say a fair scheduled for next August is not likely, even if they can raise the money.

Arkansas Labor Department officials have told fair organizers that wiring in three of the buildings will not pass inspection and that the buildings are in violation of state safety standards.

Organizers obtained temporary waivers to hold the fair last month.  But fair officials were told the problems would have to be corrected.
