Amber Alert Program commemorates 16th year

UNDATED (KAIT) - Police across the nation will commemorate the Amber Alert Awareness Day.

The Amber Alert Program was created in 1996 to provide emergency broadcast messages to the public when a child has been abducted after Amber Hagerman was abducted Jan. 13.

Amber Alert provides media and broadcasting companies with information about the child and abductor, including physical descriptions, photos, which could lead to the child's recovery.

To date, more than 550 children have been brought home safe because of the program.
