Train Hits 18-Wheeler

JONESBORO, AR - Traffic on Highway 49 was stalled Wednesday after a train hit a semitruck just outside of Jonesboro. It happened around four in the afternoon at a crossing near Busch Agricultural Resources offices, which is just north of the city limits.

A semitruck driver had driven through the railroad crossing, and Brian Hayes, the driver of a Stratton Seed truck, was following it. Hayes said his trailer had just been loaded with wheat seed. He stopped at the railroad tracks before crossing. Hayes saw a train down the tracks to his right, but he thought he had enough time to get through.

"I did pull over the railroad tracks and stopped, and about 30 seconds later, I heard the train come by with the whistle, and the end result is what's behind me," said Hayes.

After the incident, Hayes said there are two lessons he had learned; to know his distances a little better, and to never cross the tracks when you see a train coming.

There was minimal damage to the truck and to the train. Brian Hayes was cited for failure to yield at a railroad crossing. No one was injured.
