Newport man arrested in murder investigation

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A Newport man is in jail following an investigation into the death of another man.

Lt. Patrick Weatherford with Newport police states in news release officers were called Sunday afternoon to the home of Ronald Edwin Everett, 50, at 418 Newport Avenue in regards to a shooting.

Weatherford states Everett had been shot in the chest and was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead around 4 p.m.

An investigation revealed the suspect pulled up to the front of the house and shot Everett as he approached the car, according to Weatherford.

Police developed Buddy Gene Summers, 37, of Newport as the suspect and later arrested him without incident.

Summers is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center and is expected to appear in court Tuesday. Weatherford states the charges against Summers will be announced in court.

Right now a motive for the shooting is unclear, but police state Everett was acquainted with Summers.

Arkansas State Police is assisting with the Newport Police Department's murder investigation, the first of 2015.
