Missouri State Highway Patrol investigating in-custody death in Kennett

KENNETT, MO (KAIT) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating after a man died while in police custody early Sunday morning.

According to their Facebook page, officers with the Kennett Police Department conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Baldwin and Clipper Streets around 12:30 a.m.

During the stop, a man inside the vehicle tried to run away and was pursued by officers.

The unidentified man was found hiding behind a house in the 600-block of North Jackson Street and taken into custody without incident.

He was taken to the Kennett Police Department, where he began complaining about shortness of breath.

Medic One Ambulance Service was called and took him to the Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center.

The man later became unresponsive and was pronounced dead.

The Kennett Police Department contacted the Missouri State Highway Patrol and requested they investigate the incident.
