JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead County Circuit Clerk's office announced the creation of a program to help veterans Thursday.

They are partnering with Fidlar Technologies to provide discounts and incentives for local veterans at area businesses.

"I'm a military brat. My dad was in the army for 23 years so I have a heart for veterans and I want to reward them in any way," Craighead County Circuit Court Clerk Candace Edwards said.

The program is called Honor Rewards. Veterans who sign up can receive discounts at participating businesses throughout Region 8. Approximately a week or two after signing up for Honor Rewards, the veteran will receive an ID card in the mail to use at local participating businesses and retailers.

Edwards said one reason she liked this program is because when veterans fill out the application, they are reminded to file their DD-214s with the circuit clerk's office too.

A DD-214 helps veterans receive a wide range of benefits. However, Edwards said if they haven't filed it, they might not be able to get those benefits.

"It could be as much as getting a loan for college, getting a mortgage for your house or something we don't like to talk about, a military burial," Edwards said. "Not only are they going to get a discount, it's going to give them a little reminder that they may want to file this with the office. I just felt like this was a great program."

Edwards said veterans often fall on hard times. This is simply a way to help out.

"As we know, the cost of living is going up while their veterans benefits are not," Edwards said. "So any little bit that they can save, 10% here, 10% there, can make a difference in being able to do something this month or not getting to do it."

Edwards said after launching the program Wednesday, they already have three businesses signed up for the program and more want to join.

If you're an interested business or veteran, staff from the Circuit Clerk's office will be set up at the NEA District Fair all next week to provide more information.

You can also contact their office at (870) 933-5430 or visit the Honor Rewards website for more information.
