PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Though National Teacher Appreciation Week is in May, one local group started showing their gratitude early.
Current and retired teachers gathered in Paragould Saturday evening for the third annual Red Apple Gala.
The Literacy League of Greene, Poinsett, and Craighead Counties hosted the event at the Paragould Community Center.
Educators enjoyed a meal, door prizes, and meeting fellow teachers with a few shared memories.
"Sometimes we forget all that teachers do and so this is a night we wanted to take to honor teachers and recognize them for all that they do in their community," David Agnew, a Literacy League member said.
Though Agnew said the league does not benefit from the event financially, it gives them an opportunity to seek volunteers.
"We work with people who have difficulty reading and want to learn to read better," Agnew said. "We break even with this event, but we get to come in contact with people who want to volunteer and help out in various ways and help be tutors."
The Literacy League provides free one-on-one tutoring for adults.
