JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A pair of fundraising events for the Jonesboro D. A. R. E. program were recently canceled as officials said the organization is trying to do more with less funding.

Officials with the D. A. R. E. program went last week to the Jonesboro Advertising and Promotions Commission to discuss a lack of funding for the program.

A 24-hour ride and the Riding on the Ridge event were called off due to funding issues.

Paul Holmes, public information specialist with the Jonesboro Police Department, said D. A. R. E. only receives donations from the public and does not receive taxpayer money.

Holmes said the program helps to build trust in Jonesboro and works with school children, teaching lessons about a variety of things.

"At this challenging time that we find ourselves in, anything we can do to support children resisting drugs, violence, bullying, peer pressure we want to do that," Holmes said.

Holmes said the program is appreciative of all their loyal donors.

D. A. R. E. will be hosting a color run on April 29 at Joe Mack Campbell Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
