BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) - Plans to improve an area known for flooding in Brookland moved forward this week.

Mayor Kenneth Jones says city council approved the purchase of land on the 300 block of Bernis Street.

The city plans to build a detention pond there to keep the three inches of water off the street they normally see there during a flash flood event.

Mayor Jones told Region 8 News back in September that, "Around 20 to 25% of our people, see flooding right here in this area. But our goal is to get the people that are having the flash flood event, to not have it 98% of the time."

Mayor Jones says they will begin construction on the detention pond after the first of the year.
