NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A huge racing event is drawing thousands of people to a local drag strip in Newport this weekend.
JJ Da Boss and the Memphis Street Outlaws from the Discovery Channel show brought a big drag racing event to Newport for the weekend.
It offered local racers and those willing to travel to the chance to race their cars against the show's stars and get the opportunity to make it on the national show.
The races that were recorded Saturday in front of thousands of fans will be featured in the show's season 2 finale.
Nikki Rutherford with Speedy's Newport Dragstrip said they have never had an event this big in their 10 years of being open.
She said they usually have a few hundred people at their races on Sundays, so to have thousands of spectators in their stands is huge for the business and the entire town.
"It's bringing lots of business for hotels, restaurants, everything in the city of Newport," Rutherford said. "It's family entertainment so we hope we can keep doing this."
Racing continues with the Memphis Street Outlaws on Sunday in Newport.
The gates open at 9 a.m., with racing set to begin at noon.
The regular tickets are $20 with VIP tickets set at $50. The VIP passes get you to the starting line.
Rutherford said she's happy to see the show put Newport on the racing map.
