JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Nettleton Junior High teacher has worked this summer to make her classroom environment more comfortable for her students.

Heather Bradway, a 7th grade English teacher, is getting light filters to install in her classroom.

“The filters can help numerous different things with students,” said Bradway. “Students with migraines, it can help them by filtering out some of the harsh lighting.”

In past school years, like herself, Bradway has had students complain of migraines and other issues that have caused them to lose focus in class.

She believes the lighting could be the cause.

“It can help with concentration, because the lights here are not natural lighting,” said Bradway. “I don’t have windows in my classroom, so I’m not able to let the natural light in.”

The English teacher said by filtering out the fluorescent lights, the lighting will appear more natural.

“The filters that I picked out are blue, so it will give the room a blue tint,” said Bradway. “With the research I’ve done, blue and green lighting tends to help with concentration and productivity.”

Bradway has also incorporated flex seating in her classroom.

She’s looking to purchase a classroom set of headphones and bouncy bands for desks, which also promotes better concentration.

“I would hope to be able to take some of the distractions away from students,” Bradway said. “That way they can focus more on reading and writing and give them more of a comfortable place to do their learning.”

Bradway has a account, which is a charity that makes it easy for people to donate to local classrooms in need.

“There are a lot of Jonesboro teachers on donors choose,” said Bradway. “So, people who are looking to donate to any of our teachers can go to the donors choose website and search by city. All the different teachers in our area are on there. You can look them up and see the many different projects each teacher has on there. There are a lot of good ones on there that are in this area.”
