CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - WARNING: Graphic photo of the animal below.
A local animal shelter has increased a reward after a dumped dog died what they say was a "horrible death." Meanwhile, another dog was found in connection to this case.
Karol Wilcox, president of the Caruthersville Humane Society in Hayti, said in an email Tuesday that they received a call about a dead brindle pit bull southeast of Caruthersville over the levee near an off-road trail.
"We followed the directions and were horrified to find a deceased female pit bull on the trail and a black kennel with bedding in the woods," Wilcox said. "It looked like the dog broke out of the kennel, flipping it on its side, and made it about five feet before dying."
Erma Page, CHS manager, said the dog had injuries to her right front leg and chest.
"It looks like they left her in a kennel in the woods and she broke out to die," Page said. She added it "surely died alone and a horrible death."
On Wednesday, Wilcox said another black pit bull was found in relation to this case. It was "well underweight and in need of medical care." CHS has taken possession of the dog.
CHS is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in this case. Those wishing to leave a tip should call 573-359-0113 or local law enforcement. Anonymous tips can be emailed to the shelter at email@example.com.
