JONESBORO, AR - Today marks the 75th anniversary of the election of Hattie Caraway to the U.S. Senate.

Caraway was from Jonesboro and she won a special election in 1932 to fill the unexpired term of her husband, who had passed away.  Caraway went on to be elected to two full terms on her own, the first woman to earn the distinction.

Senator Blanche Lincoln is marking the anniversary.  Lincoln, who is also from east Arkansas, says it was Caraway who paved the way for women seeking elective office.

Caraway served in the Senate until 1945.  There were 16 women in the U.S. Senate today.
