JONESBORO, AR - Forty years ago today, then Arkansas State College in Jonesboro was elevated to university status with Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's signature on House Bill 8.

The bill, which became Act 3 of 1967, took effect six months later.  Enthusiastic students who celebrated the new status of the Jonesboro school included a young fraternity pledge named Mike Beebe, who just last week was sworn in as Arkansas' 45th governor.

K8 News will have more on ASU's 40th anniversary of university status tonight, including a visit with former ASU Presidente Dr. Eugene Smith, on Nightbeat.
