Freezing Rain, Flooding Possible

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Winter weather is forecast for northern Arkansas late tonight.  A storm system is expected to bring freezing rain to the region.

The National Weather Service has put much of north Arkansas on notice that winter weather is on the way.

Forecasters say the freezing rain for much of the area would not likely begin until the early morning, making for possibly hazardous road conditions tomorrow in the north part of the state.

State highway department spokesman Randy Ort says the agency is prepared.  The weather service has not been able to predict yet how far south the freezing rain will come.  Ort says highway crews are at the ready and the equipment and materials are in place.

A cold front is forecast to move through Arkansas today, with moisture expected to spread over the cold air.  Forecasters expect the result to be widespread rain over south and central Arkansas, and freezing rain over the northern part of the state.

Separately, the weather service issued a flood warning for the Mississippi River at Caruthersville, Missouri due to expected minor flooding on unprotected farm land in northeast Arkansas.
