OSCEOLA, Ark. (KAIT) – An Osceola woman will spend time behind bars after pleading guilty to killing her husband.

In July 2022, Osceola police officers arrested Karen Denton after they found Thomas Porter suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest at the Day’s Inn and Suites on West Keiser Avenue. He later died of his injuries.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, in a hearing before Honorable Daniel Ritchey, Denton shifted her plea to guilty, receiving a 30-year sentence in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

In a news release, Prosecuting Attorney Sonia Hagood lauded the efforts of the Osceola Police Department and Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Dustin Jones and Jeremy Thomas in securing the conviction.

“This significant plea is part of a series of successful prosecutions, including four first-degree murder convictions after jury trials in Crittenden and Mississippi Counties,” she said.

Hagood went on to say that the Blytheville team was able to secure three more murder convictions on Tuesday, Jan. 23, in addition to the Osceola case.

“The perseverance and dedication of our police and prosecutors often go unnoticed, yet they are pivotal in achieving convictions and substantial sentences. The collaborative work of the Osceola Police Department and Deputy Prosecutors Jones and Thomas over the past 18 months exemplifies our united front against violent crime, reinforcing our unwavering commitment to the safety and justice of our community,” she emphasized.
