Lyon College joins NCAA Division III
BATESVILLE, Ark. (KAIT) - A Northeast Arkansas college’s athletics program is moving to the NCAA Division III.
Lyon College announced on Wednesday that the NCAA Division III Membership Committee approved its active Division III membership.
The school formerly competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. They began their transition to the NCAA in 2023.
“This is a major milestone for Lyon College and a moment of pride for our entire campus community,” said Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner. “Active NCAA Division III membership affirms our deep commitment to student-athlete development, academic excellence, and ethical competition. I could not be prouder of our athletics staff and the many students, faculty and staff members, and fans who supported this journey.”
Lyon will become an active member of Division III on Sep. 1 and will be eligible to compete in NCAA championships.
“Our move to NCAA Division III has been intentional and mission-driven,” said Athletic Director Kevin Jenkins. “I’m proud of the work our coaches, student-athletes and staff have done to meet the rigorous standards of active membership. This designation opens the door to championship opportunities and elevates the entire student-athlete experience.”
Lyon College is a member of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The football program competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
“At Lyon, athletics and academics go hand in hand,” said Grafton. “Our students are scholars and competitors who learn to lead with integrity and resilience. Becoming an active NCAA Division III member ensures that our athletics programs will continue to thrive within a framework that values learning, leadership and service.”
