MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) - Deputies warn citizens to be aware of text messages claiming to be from payment companies.

In a Facebook post, the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office warns that scammers are sending texts claiming to be Apple Pay.

“No legitimate company will request funds through bitcoin or gift cards. Scammers choose these sources because there’s no way to recover your money. Be vigilant about your personal information,” the office said.

The office also included advice from the Federal Trade Commission to avoid scams.

To avoid being scammed, be suspicious of unsolicited contact, pressure to act quickly, requests for personal information, and suspicious payment methods (like gift cards or cryptocurrency). If you receive a suspicious alert or message, do not click on links or open attachments; instead, verify the request by contacting the company or person directly using their known contact information.
