LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) - A week before 4/20, a day associated with marijuana, Arkansas State Police are warning residents not to drive high.

In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Arkansas Highway Safety Office and local law enforcement warn that those who “Drive High, Get a DWI.”

To reduce drug-impaired driving, state and local police will conduct high-visibility enforcement April 17-20.

“Driving while impaired by any substance—legal or illegal—puts you and others in harm’s way,” Col. Mike Hagar, Arkansas public safety secretary, said in a statement. “It’s a common and dangerous misconception that people drive better when they are high.”

Driving high has serious and deadly consequences, Monday’s news release said. According to an NHTSA study, from 2019-2021, 26% of drivers seriously injured or killed in crashes tested positive for marijuana.
