CONWAY, SC. (WMBF/Gray News) - A mother in South Carolina walked through fire to save her 3-year-old from a burning apartment.

Miracle Keith walked downstairs to find her apartment on fire around 4 a.m. on May 30. She then went back upstairs.

“She ran back upstairs to grab Amiri, but she had to run through the fire and smoke and all the heat to even get out,” Nina Keith, Miracle’s mother, said.

Amiri is Miracle’s 3-year-old daughter.

“It was very terrifying,” Nina Keith said.

Nina got the call from her daughter, Harmony, who lives next door to Miracle. Harmony told her that Miracle and Amiri had escaped from the apartment fire.

Harmony also woke up around 4 a.m. and smelled smoke. She went next door and found the doorknob hot to the touch.

Harmony tried to open the door, but Miracle was already there.

“Miracle slung the door open, and they just came out and collapsed,” Nina Keith said.

Miracle, Amiri and a visiting friend, Morgan, all needed medical attention.

Amiri sustained second-degree burns to her hands, feet, arms and legs. She has been released from ICU burn care in Augusta and is doing better.

“They have her all bandaged up; they didn’t want her to walk… but you can’t keep her down,” Nina Keith said. “That little girl has so much energy and so much joy; she wants to sing, and she wants to dance.”

Miracle also suffered severe burns and damage to her lungs. Doctors are still working to get her to breathe on her own.

The Keiths say the mother and daughter lost everything. A GoFundMe has been started for those who wish to help.

As Miracle continues to fight, her family says they are thankful for all the prayers and generosity the community has shared. They are even more thankful for Miracle’s act of courage.

“We are so proud of her for having the courage and determination to do that,” Nina Keith said. “They said a lot of people wouldn’t have done that,” her father, Kenya Keith, added.

You can donate to Miracle and Amiri’s GoFundMe here. A separate GoFundMe has also been created for Morgan, the visiting friend injured in the fire.
