Fire official recommends battery-operated candles for Halloween jack-o-lanterns
BROOKLAND, Ark. (KAIT) -Halloween is next week and people are getting ready for all the spooky celebrations.
If your to-do list includes making jack-o-lanterns, make sure your fun doesn’t turn into a fire.
The traditional way to light a jack-o-lantern is to use a candle.
But Assistant Fire Chief with the Brookland Fire Protection District John Burns said the best way is to use a battery-operated candle to decrease the chances of something catching on fire.
“Well, a lot of times a child could be walking near that pumpkin, and they have long clothing, and it falls over into there, and they will be standing there at the door trick or treating and won’t even know their clothes will be near that open flame,” Burns said.
Burns added that they do want you to turn those battery candles off before you go to bed because they still have the chance of starting a fire as well.
